Bright sunny skies and near perfect conditions greeted fans for round 16 of the world MotoGP at Phillip Island today. Australian Casey Stoner toped all practice sessions and is poised to take out this seasons MotoGP Championship. If Stoner wins on Sunday and Jorge Lorenzo finishes off the podium (4th or worse), then the Aussie will secure his second MotoGP Championship.

Stoner clocked 01:30:46 in the first of two practice sessions to be the fastest rider of the day. Reigning world champion Jorge Loreno clocked the second fastest time of the day at 1:30:74. Rounding out the top three was 'Super Sic' registering a 1:30:91 even after crashing in both sessions. The remainder of the field (4th thru 15th) is separated by less than one second ensuring that the battle for the minor placings will certainly be entertaining come Sunday.

Former 9 time World champion Valentino Rossi has struggled all season on the Ducati, and today could only manage to register 12th and 13th fastest times in each session. He is approximately 1.5 seconds off the leaders and working hard to close the gap.

Without a doubt the talking point of the day occurred during the first practice session of the Moto2 class when series leader Marquez rammed into the rear of Thai rider Wilairot on turn 3. Both riders were extremely lucky to avoid serious injury and teams will be forced to work overtime to ensure their riders have race ready bikes come Sunday.

All of Australia is behind their local hero Casey Stoner hoping that he will secure pole in tomorrows final practice and qualifying session.

Maroon's Win State Of Origin III

QLD State Of Origin WinnersIn front of a record 52,498 fans at Suncorp Stadium Queensland have won the third and final State Of Origin clash against New South Wales.

In what was one of the most talked about clashes of the 31-year State Of Origin history, Darren Lockyer has given fans one of the most memorable games of his career. Lockyer has appeared in 36 State Of Origin games over the course of his career, and last night's win, the sixth straight for QLD, will be one of the highlights of his career.

While it was a night for celebration for QLD players and fans, a season ending injury to Johnathan Thurston midway through the second half put a dampener on the occasion. In his 21st consecutive game for the Maroons, Thurston sustained the injury while attempting a tackle on Watmough.  Teammate Ashley Harrison rolled underneath the left leg of Thurston and early diagnosis suggests a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

In the end QLD were simply too good for their southern neighbours and despite a much better second half from the Blues, the final score of 34-24 means that QLD State Of Origin dominance continues for at least another year.

FINAL SCORES

QLD 34 (G. Inglis 2, C. Smith, B. Slater, S. Thaiday, J. Yow Yeh tries; J. Thurston 4, C.Smith goals)

NSW 24 (G. Bird, J. Hayne, A. Minichiello, A. Uate tries; J. Soward 4 goals)
