Australian Bernard Tomic has won the 2012 AAMI Classic at Kooyong. In what can only be considered as perfect preparation for the Australian Open, the 19-year old has become the youngest ever champion of the AAMI Classic. Tomic defeated American Mardy Fish 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and is now set to take on Spanish player Fernando Verdasco today in the 1st round of the Australian Open. The Spaniard is coming off of a semi-final in Auckland, so the Aussie young gun faces a tough start to his Open campaign. In response to his victory and upcoming match with Verdasco, Tomic said "It was good that all three matches were three sets and I got a good workout and got my confidence up by playing well," "I think I need to come out and be aggressive, like the way I was playing in the first few matches here at Kooyong. "If I…
Aussie young gun Bernard Tomic has defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils at the AAMI Classic Kooyong to advance to his first unofficial final. Tomic showed great poise against the often flashy Monfils after failing to serve out the match in the third set when he was 5-3 up. He then failed to convert two match points on Monfils serve in the 12th game. The Australian was able to put those points behind him as he ran away with a 5-0 lead in the third set tiebreaker. The win was secured for Tomic after Monrils sent a backhand over the baseline capping off an extended rally. Final score 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) Tomic now awaits the result of the other Round 2 matches to see who he will face in the final. It will either be Austrian Jurgen Melzer of American Mardy Fish come Saturday. Tomic's success at Kooyong is great preparation…

Tomic now progresses to the semi-final stage of the Kooyong exhibition tournament where he faces French sensation Gael Monfils. Yesterday's windy conditions made it tough going for both players and the 19-year old was has happy with his performance. "It was good because we both played pretty well," Tomic said. "It's good to play in the wind, especially before the Australian Open when the court is settled and there's not that much wind." Tomic's semi-final appearance set's him up for a potential winning result leading into the Australian…
LLEYTON HEWITT BOWS OUT OF SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL
Written by Rob Huxley | Wednesday, 11 January 2012 14:45
Australian tennis veteran Lleyton Hewitt has bowed out of the Sydney International tournament in the first round losing to Serbian Viktor Troicki. The Aussie started well winning the opening set easily however the big-serving Serb managed to out gun Hewitt in the second and third sets winning easily in the end 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. During the course of the match, Hewitt struggled with his serve managing a poor 51% first serve percentage along with seven double faults. Conversely, Troicki's service game was solid accompanied by 13 aces that helped him put away the veteran Australian. While the former world No.1 continues with his comeback from a chronic toe injury, this loss is not his ideal preparation for the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne. "I played well, there was a lot positives to take out of the match," Hewitt said. "He's a tough competitor. He doesn't give you too many cheap…
