Rory McIlroy has maintained his nerve and collected his first major title with a runaway victory in the US Open at Congressional.
The Irishman started the day with what looked to be an insurmountable eight stroke lead and that is what it turned out to be.
Unlike the US Masters just two months ago where he blew a three stroke lead on the final day and shot a woeful eight over par 80, today he kept his composure and added a final round of 70 to finish the tournament at a record 16 under par for the four rounds.
Australia’s Jason Day finished outright second eight strokes behind McIlroy with South Korean YE Kang third a further shot back.
Day had also finished second in the US Masters.
Novak Djokovic has defeated world number one Rafeal Nadal in straight set’s to win the Internazionali BNL d'Italia at Rome's Foro Italico 6-4 6-4. This loss makes it four finals this year that Nadal has conceded to Djokovic with previous clashes at Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid. It also represents the first time in the career of Nadal that he has lost twice on clay. The loss comes just one week before the French Open at Roland Garros, the only…
El Gran Senor won the Melbourne Cup at Sandown tonight.
THE drop back in distance from 2400m of the BMW to the 1600m of tomorrow’s Doncaster Handicap hasn’t deterred punters from supporting Horse of the Year favourite Theseo. Through the week the triple Group 1 winner has been one of the best supported horses on Sportingbet where his odds have been shortened from $13.00 to $11.00. Although narrowly beaten in The BMW, Theseo has a solid record over the 1600m with a win, a second and two thirds from five…
FORMER jumps jockey Ciaron Maher has landed one of his most satisfying victories at Oakbank where he has taken out the Great Eastern Steeplecase with Pentacolo. In a battling finish Pentacolo had to dig deep to edge past Mephistopheles who fought back gamely when tackled. But in a keenly run affair, jockey Brad McLean had given Pentacolo a perfect run which allowed him to find a little bit more in the closing brutal final stages. At the finish Pentacolo had…
The return to racing on the Geelong synthetic track has ended in shambles today with the program abandoned after only one event was held. It was to be the first meeting on the “ThoroughTrack” surface since October 7. Since then there has been an on-going inquiry into the deaths of seven horses that had contested races there in the first 37 meetings since the track was opened as an all-weather surface. That report was unable to arrive at any definitive…
EL Galo faces the toughest test of his career in what could well be his final race start in the Golden Easter final at Wentworth Park on Saturday. The super sprinter took his record to 40 wins from 62 starts with another all-the-way success in the semi-finals last Saturday but, although still very fast, his time was somewhat below what he is capable of. He stopped the clock at 29.88s, more than four lengths outside his Wentworth Park best of…
BRAD Rawiller has taken advantage of a remarkable dream run to score an upset victory aboard Phelan Ready in today’s Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, the richest 2yo race in the world, at Rosehill. Drawn the extreme outside of the 16 horse field, Rawiller didn’t push the colt out at the start and enabled him to drift across behind the field and settle on the fence, albeit a long way from the lead. But from there things just kept going…
TOP jockey Darren Beadman maintained the pain for punters and made it a Group 1 running double when he steered the bolter Fiumicino to a narrow upset win in the BMW Stakes at Rosehill today. Forty minutes early Beadman had steered Neroli to a comfortable victory over Hot Danish. This time he had to use all his skill and energy in a driving finish to get the edge over Theseo who had led unchallenged for most of the journey. The…
