AMERICAIN (A De Royer-Dupre) 7h By Dynaformer - America (26:10-3-3): Looking to become only the sixth horse to win two Melbourne Cups and right on track to do so. Resumed from a spell to win Fr - Deauxville 2500m Listed race before stumbled at the start and never threatened in 5-3/4 len 10th (61.0) Jukebox Jury 3000m Fr - Deauville Prix Kergorlay Aug 21. Resumed from a let-up with a super effort when raced midfield to the turn then sprinted away to score 2-1/4 len win (58.0) Tullamore, Illo 2500m M Valley M.V. Gold Cup dead trk Oct 22. Followed much the same program when he won last year. Has an extra 3.5kg this time but rates very highly.
JUKEBOX JURY (Mark Johnston) 6h By Montjeu - Mare Aux Fees (21:9-2-2): Well travelled import with an impressive record in numerous countries. Led throughout in the race Americain won last year when 3 len win (59.0) Kasbah Bliss, Brigantin 3000m Fr - Deauville Prix Kergorlay Aug 21, then led again in the race Vintage Crop won before he won the 1993 Melbourne Cup when he shared a dh win (62.0) Duncan, Red Cadeaux 2816m Ire - Curragh Irish St. Leger dead trk Sept 10. Bold front runner who handles big weights well. Strong claims.
DUNADEN (Mikel Delzangles) 6h By Nicobar - La Marlia (27:7-8-5): Resumed from a let-up with a win and a 2nd in Group races over 3100m at Longchamps before another break. A little disappointing when resumed again and faded from midfield for 5-3/4 len 9th (59.0) Jukebox Jury 3000m Fr - Deauville Prix Kergorlay Aug 21, but looked the goods when settled back early, worked into it on the turn and sprinted away late for impressive 3/4 len win (58.0) Tanby, Bauer 2400m Geelong Geelong Cup dead trk Oct 19. Following the same path as last year's winner Americain. It wasn't the strongest Geelong Cup this time but he did it in fine style and connections said he will be a lot better for that run. Expect a forward showing.
DRUNKEN SAILOR (Luca Cumani) 7g By Tendulkar - Ronni Pancake (41:11-9-4): Settled just worse than midfield but made ground throughout for win G B - Goodwood 2414m Group 3 before hot favourite in a field of five and raced handy but finished a long way from the winner with 4-1/2 len, 7 len 3rd (62.5) Motrice, Eternal Heart 2816m G B - Goodwood March Stakes dead trk Aug 27. Had a let-up before settled back from wide draw (14) and found trouble at vital stages when struck interference near 600m and disappointed for a run for 4-1/4 len 7th (56.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Should have finished a lot closer last time. Has a win and two 2nds from five tries this trip. Commands respect.
GLASS HARMONIUM (Michael Moroney) 6h By Verglas - Spring Symphony (21:5-5-2): Resumed with a solid 2nd in a Group 2 over 1600m here before led for a close up 4th in a Group 1 over 1800m at Caulfield. Led again before edged out after a stirring head and head battle in sht hd 2nd (55.5) December Draw 2000m F'ton Turnbull Stakes dead trk Oct 2, then played up in the barrier before lost all chance when he blew the start and never got warm in 6-1/2 len 10th (59.0) Pinker Pinker 2040m M Valley W S Cox Plate dead trk Oct 22. Jumped away perfectly on Saturday and led throughout for impressive ¾ len win (59) Mourayan, Rekindled Interest 2000m F’ton Mackinnon Stakes dead trk Oct 29. That was first win with two seconds in quality races only three starts this track. The furtherest he has been was a smart 2nd in the 2400m Brisbane Cup in June. So long as he begins okay he will be in it for a long way.
MANIGHAR (Luca Cumani) 6g By Linamix - Mintly Fresh (20:6-3-3): Made some late ground for close 5th last year's Caulfield Cup and settled well back from wide draw (19) before running on fairly for a distant 9th in this race last year. Moderate at best when resumed with an 8th of 15 in the G B - Goodwood Cup 3219m before just off the pace throughout in 3-1/2 len 4th (59.0) Jukebox Jury 3000m Fr - Deauville Prix Kergorlay Aug 21, then very similar effort to last year when raced just a little better than midfield and ran on nicely for 3 len 4th (56.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Rarely far away but he is having trouble winning one. Must still be considered.
UNUSUAL SUSPECT (Michael Kent) 8h By Unusual Heat - Penpont (59:9-8-6): Had only four starts since won the Hollywood Turf Cup 2414m this time last year. Resumed from eight months off when long odds and ran on fairly for 4th M Valley 1600m Group 2 in Sept, then freshened but faced a Vet examination after dropped to the tail early and only plodded past a couple of tired ones late for 7-1/4 len 10th (60.0) Boom 'n' Zoom 2025m Cranbourne Cranbourne Cup dead trk Oct 9. Much better effort last time when again got a long way back and checked near 1600m before disappointed for a run when making good late ground for 3-1/2 len 6th (56.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Gave the impression last time that he will love the 3200m. Worth plenty of consideration.
FOX HUNT (Mark Johnston) 5g By Dubawi - Kiltubber (15:5-4-0): Won a couple of restricted races G B - Epsom 2424m and G B - Ascot 2414m before always handy for 2nd G B - York 2816m Listed race and only try this distance made late ground for close up 4th of 15 G B - Goodwood Cup 3219m in July. Then freshened before always handy for moderate 3-3/4 len 6th (61.5) Moyenne Corniche 2816m G B - York Ebor C2 Aug 20, and hot favourite when on the pace throughout in 3/4 len win (60.0) Fair Boss, Dawn Twister 2800m Ger - Dortmund St Leger slow trk Sept 18. First try at Group 1 level but looks to be improving all the time. Worth some thought.
LUCAS CRANACH (Anthony Freedman) 5h By Mamool - Lots Of Love (10:5-1-0): Ran on from near the tail in a small field for win Ger - Hamburg 2400m Group 2 before came from last early in 5-1/2 len 5th (60.0) Danedream 2400m Ger - Hoppegarten Deutschland July 24, then had an interupted preparation and faced a Vet examination before and after the race and the later found him to be lame following excellent effort when loomed up out wide for 3-1/4 len 5th (56.0) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Troubles have been minor but they have checked his preparation for this. Shapes as though this distance should really suit.
MOURAYAN (Robert Hickmott) 6h By Alhaarth - Mouramara (27:3-7-4): Outsprinted when resumed with distant 10th C'field 1400m Group 2 before came from well back early for solid 4th Rosehill 1800m Listed race in August. Appreciated extra ground when raced handy and ran on well for hd, 3-1/2 len 3rd (58.5) Lamasery, Crafty Irna 2000m R'hill Kingston Town dead trk Sept 10, then first win in 17 Australian starts when on the pace throughout for 2 len win (58.0) Niwot, Showcause 2500m F'ton Bart Cummings slow trk Oct 2. Very sound lead-up for this when 3/4 len 2nd (59) Glass Harmonium 2000m F’ton Mackinnon Stakes dead trk Oct 29. Only start this distance was an on-pace 3rd in last year's Sandown Cup Group 3. A lot tougher this time but looks much improved. Worth some thought.
PRECEDENCE (Bart Cummings) 6g By Zabeel - Kowtow (32:6-4-1): Won the Group 2 M Valley Cup 2500m before closest at the finish with a distant 8th this race last year. Showed little to recommend when faded for 7th C'field 1800m Group 1 then didn't give a yelp in 6-1/2 len 10th (56.5) December Draw 2000m F'ton Turnbull Stakes dead trk Oct 2, and worked into it on the turn but showed no late dash in 6-1/4 len 10th (56.0) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15, and showed little to recommend when 9-1/2 len 9th (59) Glass Harmonium 2000m F’ton Mackinnon Stakes dead trk Oct 29. Form not flash this time in but trainer has a habit of getting them to improve on the day. Commands respect.
RED CADEAUX (Ed Dunlop) 6g By Cadeaux Genereux - Artisia (23:5-5-2): Sat handy early in small field and cleared out late for 9 len. win Ire - Curragh Cup Group 3 2816m before freshened but never likely in distant 10th G B - Goodwood Cup 3219m Group 2, but freshened again and fair enough effort when made a little ground for 3-3/4 len 5th (59.0) Jukebox Jury 3000m Fr - Deauville Prix Kergorlay Aug 21, and always handy in small field for dh, len 3rd (62.0) Jukebox Jury, Duncan, 2816m Ire - Curragh Irish St. Leger dead trk Sept 10. Has been placed up to 3621m so should have no trouble with the distance. Has some claims.
HAWK ISLAND (Chris Waller) 7g By Hawk Wing - Crimphill (40:10-8-2): Placed two of three in England before coming to Australia in 2009. Resumed with two moderate runs over shorter trips in Group 2s at W Farm before ran on from midfield for 2nd Rosehill Group 2 Hill Stakes 2000m and came from midfield early for 2-3/4 len 2nd (56.0) The Verminator 2400m R'wick The Metrop dead trk Oct 1. Showed little to impress when settled well back and failed to make any ground when 7-3/4 len 13th (55.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Only try this trip was favourite but fell in the Sydney Cup in April. Has some prospects but needs to find plenty on Caulfield effort.
ILLO (Bart Cummings) 6h By Tertullian - Iora (14:5-3-3): Resumed from a let-up for well beaten 2nd Ger - Dortmund 2000m Group 3 before spelled and sent to Bart after odds-on favourite sht hd win (60.0) Oriental Fox, Aviator 2400m Ger - Koln Cup July 10. Raced handy and looked the winner when ran to the front on the turn but ran out of condition when 2-1/4 len, 1-1/4 len 3rd (56.5) Americain, Tullamore 2500m M Valley M.V. Gold Cup dead trk Oct 22. Hasn't had the usual Bart Cummings preparation but comes here with a solid European record. Must be considered.
LOST IN THE MOMENT (Saeed Bin Suroor) 5h By Danehill Dancer - Streetcar (17:4-4-1): Added to consistent record in quality races when only try this trip came from well back early for 2nd G B - Goodwood Cup 3219m then freshened before had no luck but made a little late ground for 4-1/2 len 7th (60.0) Moyenne Corniche 2816m G B - York Ebor C2 Aug 20, and had support but disappointed in small field with 6-3/4 len 4th (57.0) Quest For Peace 2414m G B - Ascot Cumberland Ldge Oct 1. Goodwood placing commands respect.
MODUN (Saeed Bin Suroor) 5g By King's Best - Olympienne (8:3-3-0): Lightly raced but is a giant of a horse that should be suited by the big track. Ran on for 2nd G B - York 2092m (C2) before favourite for similar effort in 2nd G B - Goodwood 1985m (C2) then freshened before came from well back for a solid 2-3/4 len 4th (57.5) Moyenne Corniche 2816m G B - York Ebor C2 Aug 20, and clearly best effort to date when came from midfield for 1-1/2 len win (59.0) Bronze Cannon, Harris Tweed 2414m G B - Kempton Park September Stks Sept 3. Improving with racing and was bought by rich stable with this race in mind. Worth plenty of consideration.
AT FIRST SIGHT (Robert Hickmott) 5h By Galileo - Healing Music (11:1-4-1): Had just over a year off before resumed and handy early but outsprinted late in F'ton 1200m, Group 3 in Aug. Then freshened before came from well back for a solid 2-1/2 len 6th (59.0) Littorio 1600m F'ton Makybe Diva dead trk Sept 3, and hung in during race before making a lot of late ground for 1/2 len 2nd (56.0) December Draw 2000m C'field Naturalism Stks Sept 17. Top trial for this when came from a distant last at the 800m for 1-3/4 len 2nd (58.0) Tanby 2400m Bendigo Bendigo Cup Oct 26. Very impressive last start and drops 5.5kg here. Led clearly before a distant second behind one of the World's best stayers in Workforce for a 2nd in the 2010 English Derby. Rates highly.
MOYENNE CORNICHE (Brian Ellison) 7g By Selkirk - Miss Corniche (26:2-6-4): Sent for a let-up after not much fancied and did little in 10th G B - York 2092m in July. Career best effort when resumed and came from a long way back early for len win (55.5) Tactician, Investissement 2816m G B - York Ebor Hcp C2 Aug 20, then very smart effort at first Australian run when came from well back on the turn for sht nk, len 3rd (57.0) Shewan, Tanby 2400m C'field Herbert Power dead trk Oct 8. Should be suited by the bigger track and extra distance. Will have plenty of supporters.
SAPTAPADI (Brian Ellison) 6g By Indian Ridge - Olympienne (14:1-2-1): Just off the pace throughout for moderate 5th behind stablemate when 5th G B - York Ebor Hcp C2 then had a let-up before settled back from widest draw (15) and struck interference near 600m before made some late ground for 3-3/4 len 8th (57.0) Shewan 2400m C'field Herbert Power dead trk Oct 8, but never threatened when 8-1/2 len 14th (54.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15. Has run a couple of Group placigs but only win was a 2414m Mdn at G B - Doncaster April 2010. This should test.
SHAMROCKER (Danny O'Brien) 4m By O'Reilly - Bohemian Blues (17:4-2-2): Outstanding record as a 3yo filly included a win in the AJC Derby plus 2nds in the VRC and AJC Oaks, but has been disappointing four starts this season. Freshened before always near the tail for 13th C'field 1800m Group 1, then slowly away and never threatened with 4-3/4 len 7th (56.0) December Draw 2000m F'ton Turnbull Stakes dead trk Oct 2, and faded from midfield early for a dismal 8-3/4 len 12th (55.5) Pinker Pinker 2040m M Valley W S Cox Plate dead trk Oct 22. Hard to recommend on form but too good to dismiss completely.
THE VERMINATOR (Chris Waller) 5g By Jeune - Fraar Side (25:7-6-3): Raced handy and cleared out late for easy win Wyong Cup Listed Race 2100m before never far from the leaders with 1-3/4 len 5th (55.0) Green Moon 2300m Newcastle Newcastle Cup Sept 15, and sound effort when came from wide draw (16) worked into to it mid-race and cleared out in the straight for impressive 2-3/4 len win (52.0) Hawk Island, Lamasery 2400m R'wick The Metrop dead trk Oct 1, but woeful effort on Saturday when 13-3/4 len 11th (59) Glass Harmonium 2000m F’ton Mackinnon Stakes dead trk Oct 29. Dismal at WFA on Saturday. Previous form first rate and he is a winner twice at 2400m - the furtherest he has been. Must be considered.
TULLAMORE (Ms Gai Waterhouse) 5g By Savabeel - Trocair (24:5-7-4): Had some support but only plodded on for moderate 5th in the Metropolitan 2400m Group 1 before top effort when ran on from midfield at the turn for 1-1/2 len, 1/2 len 3rd (54.5) Southern Speed, Green Moon 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15, and fought on well when handy throughout for 2-1/4 len 2nd (57.0) Americain 2500m M Valley M.V. Gold Cup dead trk Oct 22. Won the Brisbane Cup 2400m Group 2 in June. Scratched from F’ton on Saturday with the hope that he’d get in. Honest type who should be at his peak after five runs back in. Expect a forward showing.
NIWOT (Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes) 7g By Galileo - Too Darn Hot (22:8-4-1): Favourite when came from midfield for solid 2 len 2nd (55.5) Mourayan 2500m F'ton Bart Cummings slow trk Oct 2, then did a load of early work from wide draw (17) and far from disgraced when battled on for 6-1/2 len 12th (53.5) Southern Speed 2400m C'field Caulfield Cup Oct 15, but roared int ocontention for this when raced to the front in the straight and cleared out before eased down to score 3 len win (53.5) Macedonian, Anudjawun F’ton 2500m The Lexus dead trk Oct 29.. Was entitled to drop right out at C’field but showed plenty of heart then very impressive on Saturday. Only try this distance was favourite for win here Listed Class in May and has an outstanding sound record at this track. Keep in mind.
OLDER THAN TIME (Ms Gai Waterhouse) 5m By Don Eduardo - Up The Hill (15:5-4-1): Resuumed with moderate runs in two shorter races before prominent into the straight and showed no late dash with 6-1/4 len 5th (57.0) My Kingdom Of Fife 2000m R'wick Craven Plate dead trk Oct 1, but showed a return to form when blundered at start and came from a long way back on the turn for 3/4 len, 2-1/2 len 3rd (55.5) Galizani, Adroitly 2400m R'wick Tatt's Club Cup dead trk Oct 15. Improving with racing and only try this distance was a strong 2nd in the Sydney Cup last April. Worth some thought.
