Spring hopes ready to bloom

A number of highly ranked Melbourne Cup contenders head a stellar list of nominations for the Group 2 Memsie Stakes meeting at Caulfield next Saturday.
It was in the Memsie Stakes last year that Bart Cummings unleashed So You Think in the opening run of his fantastic Spring campaign that culminated with a gallant third in the Melbourne Cup.
Now after missing a start in last Saturday’s Warwick Stakes in Sydney, 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday is one of 22 entered for the Memsie which is often a kick-off point for the top Spring hopefuls.
Along with Maluckyday, Shamrocker and Absolutely are among those who have been nominated for the 1400-metre event that is the feature of Saturday's eight-race Caulfield program.
The Memsie has always been Danny O'Brien's preferred spring opener for AJC Derby winner Shamrocker, while Mick Kent set his sights on the event with AJC Oaks winner Absolutely after she was scratched from the Lawrence Stakes on August 13.
That trio, who are all high up in Emirates Melbourne Cup betting, are just some of the big names among the 22 entries for the race that has also been won by Sunline, Makybe Diva, El Segundo and Weekend Hussler in the past decade.
Metropolitan winner Herculian Prince may resume for Gai Waterhouse, Shamrocker's VRC Crown Oaks conqueror Brazilian Pulse has been entered after a lacklustre first-up run in the 1200m Cockram Stakes, while Mick Price's dual Group 1 winner Heart Of Dreams will kick off.
Recent Peter Moody stable acquisition King's Rose, a Group 1 winner in New Zealand, may have her first Australian start in the Memsie.
Linton and Precedence are two of last year's Melbourne Cup beaten brigade who will also resume, Rekindled Interest will continue his campaign after a slashing first-up second in the Aurie's Star Handicap, while classy mare Southern Speed, former Caulfield Cup placegetter Vigor and Lawrence Stakes placegetter Prince Obama are also entered.
The Memsie Stakes is the headline act on a card that also features the $125,000 Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) for the three-year-olds.
Boom Bart Cummings-trained colt Do You Think and ultra-consistent local Golden Archer are among the boys engaged, while Satin Shoes – winner of the Quezette Stakes at Caulfield two Saturdays ago – Glissade and Metonymy are just some of the talented females that have been entered.
The Heatherlie Handicap and the Clamms Seafood Stake, both $100,000 Listed events, are the day's other Black Types events.
Robert Hickmott dominates entries for the 1700m Heatherlie with eight, including high-priced imports Alandi, At First Sight and Midas Touch, who have also been nominated alongside stablemate Linton in the Memsie.
Galaxy winner Atomic Force heads the entries for the Clamms Seafood Stakes (1100m), where unbeaten local Bel Sprinter and classy sprinting mares Avenue and Warm Love are among the Sydneysider's potential rivals.

Testing week ahead for Justice

LEADING harness trainer/driverLance Justice scored a big winning treble at Tabcorp Park in Melton on Friday but that is smallfry compared to what he is chasing this week.
His week starts at Melton today where he has two contenders in the rich Breeders Crown series and concludes on Friday where his super pacer Smoken Up is expected to have his final run before embarking on the Grand Circuit series.
But splitting those two events could be a career threatening moment for the champion reinsman.
Justice is due to fly to New Zealand on Monday in an effort to save Smoken Up's victory in the 2011 Inter Dominion at Auckland last April.
It was close to the pinnacle of Justice's career as Smoken Up defied all challenges to hold off Im Themightyquin and Blacks A Fake but that joy was soon shot to pieces when Smoken Up returned a postive swam sample.
A shocked Justice was informed by New Zealand Stewards that Smoken Up's swab sample from the Inter Dominion win on April 8, had shown the presence of the banned anti-inflammatory drug dimethyl sulfoxide, known as DMSO.
The drug itself is not banned but the timing of it's use before a race is restrictly.
At the time Justice said: ""Not only have I never treated Smoken Up with DMSO, it's never been near him. I hate the drug. It stinks. It makes me physically sick."
However the reserve sample was tested and provided the same result.
Before the race and after the race Smoken Up has proved his talent with record breaking wins and he has been swabbed dozens of times.
But the problem for Justice is that the Stewards are acting under orders and it will take a miracle for him to hold the race.
One very interesting suggestion is that when Smoken Up's swab was taken, a day before the race, the Stewards had just moved on from a stable where a trainer who freely admits using dimethyl sulfoxide, within the legal timeframe, had a horse swabbed.
In the heat of the moment Justice was quoted as saying he will quit the sport if the horse is disqualified.
The odds are that the horse will be disqualified and although Justice probably won't quit the sport it will be ineresting to see what penalty is applied to the trainer/driver.
He will be penalised $120,000 in stakemoney in losing the race alone.

The MotoGP circus moved to Sunny California this morning for the US RedBull MotoGP.· Qualifying saw former world champ Lorenzo just pipping Stoner for pole but with nothing really in it the race looked promising.·

As the lights turned green Lorenzo got the hole shot and immediately pulled a little gap over the “usual suspects” Little Dani, Stoner and Dovi.· Local hope Spies got a bad start and got caught behind Rossi who for once got a decent start.· Mid race and Lorenzo looked smooth and comfortable with a second and bit lead from Little Dani with a stalking Stoner in tow.· Lorenzo again pushed hard and tried to break the chasing – but Stoner saw this and put the hammer down passing Little Dani on the entry to the famous “corkscrew” and set his sights on Lorenzo.·

Tyre problems that have plagued the Aussie the last couple of races disappeared and with a handful of laps to go Stoner pounced – pulling off the overtaking move of the season so far.· With a great drive onto the front straight - 220km plus around the outside of Lorenzo only inches apart through the kink – Stoner was unstoppable.· Lorenzo clearly shattered by the move quickly settled for second.· With a victory margin of 5.6 seconds, the usually hard nosed Aussie was clearly ecstatic to be back on top of the winners podium.· Lorenzo appeared in real pain getting off bike courteous of a couple of big crashes during the weekend.· Little Dani took the last of the rostrum spots with a lonely and uneventful race for 3rd

Local hope Spies slowly made his way through to catch and pass Dovi with a couple of laps to go holding onto 4thspot.· Clearly disappointed with being held-up by Rossi earlier in the race – he definitely would have been a chance for a rostrum finish if he got a better start.· A race long tussle between factory Ducati riders Rossi and American Hayden saw the Doctor get up for 6th place from Hayden in 7th.· The “Texas Tornado” Colin Edwards took 8th from Barbera with Aoyama finishing out the top ten.

Stoner’s decisive win has halted Lorenzo momentum over the past couple of races.· With his lead extended to 20 points over Lorenzo, Stoner may have just answered a few critics that seem to continually pop up at the sniff of failure.

Poker

Over the past 10 years Poker has exploded in popularity. The biggest Poker Event in the world is the annual World Series Of Poker, held each year at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas NV USA. The World Series Of Poker (WSOP) features a series of poker tournaments over a series of weeks and culminates in a Main Event that features a $10,000 USD buy-in. In 2002 the Main Event for the WSOP had 631 participants. In 2003 there were 839. In 2004 the number of entrants exploded to 2,576, a 325% growth rate. In 2005, the Main Event had 5,619 players, and in 2006 8,773 players sat down in the $10,000 buy in Main Event.

The growth of poker is attributed to a number of factors, the biggest two factors being Television and Online Poker. In the 2003 World Series of Poker, Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event and took home $2,500,000. It should be noted that Chris had never actually played poker in a casino in his life, and had learnt to play poker by playing the game online. He actually qualified for the WSOP via what is known as a satellite. A satellite is small buy-in poker tournament that awards the winners with a ticket to a bigger buy-in poker tournament.

Chris Moneymaker WSOP WinnerIn 2003, Chris Moneymaker qualified for the $10,000 Main Event for $33 online at PokerStars. (View the Official Miller's Guide PokerStars Review Here). His win was also televised globally on the worldwide sports network ESPN. Once Chris’ win went public on television, online poker exploded.

The win of Chris Moneymaker in 2003 was the primary factor behind the epic growth of the online poker industry, and in 2004 the number of players in the $10,000 buy-in main event grew by 325% when 2,576 players entered for their chance at poker immortality. That year, Greg "Fossil Man" Raymer was the eventual winner and took home the $5,000,000 USD first prize.
