India Defeats Australia in Adelaide

Reigning world champions India have shown that there may still be some fight left in this year's Commonwealth Bank ODI series by beating Australia by 4 wickets.

Australia won the toss and Clarke sent in his team to bat. A revised batting lineup saw Warner and Ponting open proceedings for the Aussies. Ponting never looked comfortable and was caught early only registering 6 runs. Warner began to bed in when a brilliant piece of fielding led to a run out sending him home for just 18 runs. The Aussie captain Michael Clarke came in at first drop and looked very strong, smashing 5 boundaries in his quick fire 38. One of the highlights for the Aussies however was Peter Forrest who came to the crease and managed an impressive 66 which included 2 sixes and 5 boundaries. David Hussey top scored for the Aussies with a solid 72 from 76 deliveries. At the end of the 50 overs, the Aussies managed to tally 269 setting the stage for the Indian batsmen under the Adelaide lights.

With a decent total to chase, the Indian opening batsmen set about ferociously against the Aussie bowling attack. Gautam Gambhir led the chase with a man of the match performance hitting 92 from 111 balls before he was given out LBW from McKay. Other Indians also stepped up keeping the strike rate up while chipping away at the total, Raina (38 from 30), Sharma (33 from 41).

"Winning games are far more important than attaining individual goals ... winning is all that we should play for," Gambhir said.

"I've always believed any runs a person can score which can help the team win are far more important than getting 100 or being on a losing side."

"Ninety-two was fine and I was the top run getter but I think most of the contributions coming from the other guys – even those 12 runs of Rivandra Jadeja - were just as crucial."

"It would have been good if I would have scored a century, but it's about the team and contributions, so it was good to have scored 92 and won a match for the team."

In the end however, it was a captains knock that secured the win for the Indian team. MS Dhoni left the run chase till the very end, with the Indian's needing 13 runs from the last 5 balls. In spectacular fashion however, Dhoni smashed one of the biggest sixes of the summer (112m) straight over the bowlers head to set up the win for the boys in Blue.

Man of the Match Gambhir would have liked the Indians to secure the win a lot sooner, however he was happy with his captains performance and team's victory.

"We should have finished the game in the 48th ... but that's easier said than done as there is always far more pressure on the players in the middle-order," Gambhir said.
"We had the belief though that we could beat Australia and MS (Dhoni) did a fantastic job – he's always been a finisher."
"He stays calm and that important in these situations."

On the back of this win, the Indian's now face Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Online sports betting site Centrebet has the Indian team as solid favourites at $1.55 vs $2.45 for Sri Lanka.
