Michael Clarke has led Australia to victory in his first test as Captain on home soil. New Zealand went down by nine wickets at the Gabba in Queensland. The Aussies bowled out the Kiwis in the 2nd innings for only 150 runs leaving only 19 runs for victory which they managed to do in just three overs.
Twenty-one-year-old James Pattison was named the Man-of-the-Match after his sizzling performance in the second innings. In the first innings, the test debutante struggled with his line and length and even conceded 13 in his first over. In the second innings however, he came out firing on all cylinders. On the 2nd over of the day, Pattison took a triple-wicket maiden sending New Zealand to 5-28. This over was the turning point of the test match, and set up the Aussies for the win.
Following the match, Pattison was ecstatic about his efforts.
"It hasn't sunk in yet... I'm just happy to be able to do a job for the Australian cricket team. It's a great achievement personally, but it's great for the team as well," said Pattinson.
Even though Pattison was over the moon with his five-wicket haul, he lamented that Kiwi Brendon McCullum's scalp was the most satisfying.
"When there's someone who takes 13 off your first over in Test cricket, you get a bit nervous bowling to him sometimes," he said.
"I was pretty happy when I saw (Martin) Guptill taking the first ball; that made my nerves go away a bit."
"Pup supported me there and said, 'look, don't worry if you get driven a couple of times.'"
"I just tried to keep it out of my head and keep doing the same thing, and it paid off for me in the end."
Aussie Captain Michael Clarke applauded the efforts of his test debutantes and discussed the importance of winning the first test.
"It was important to get off to a good start here in this first Test match. We've got some tough cricket ahead of us, starting in Hobart, but through the summer against India as well," Clarke said.
