The AFL's newest team Greater Western Sydney have paraded one of their inaugural set of colours for their debut into the competition next year and they have received and under-whelming response. The bland mixture of orange, white and black with an un-inspiring design that designates who an image of what is phrased as Canberra's iconic Black Mountain Tower - No, I haven't heard of it either, is as flat as a shit-carters hat. Incredibly it was the winning design of a competition that asked locals to submit designs for the three matches GWS will play in Canberra in their first season at the top level. FOLLOWING it’s successful introduction in 2011 sixteen teams will challenge for the next season’s Foxtel Cup. The AFL today announced the fixture for the 2012 FOXTEL Cup -- the knockout competition which this year was won by VFL Club Williamstown, Teams from every State plus Canberra and the Northern Territory will be chasing a $60,000 winner’s prize – up by nearly 20 percent on the 2011 event. All first round matrches are expected to be played as curtain raisers to AFL matches with the opening game of Morningside (Qld.) taking on Launceston (TSL) at theh Metricon Stadium before the opening round match that pits the Gold Coast against Adelaide. ZAC Dawson looks certain to continue his AFL career with Fremantle after walking away from by St Kilda. Dawson couldn’t agree on terms to continue with the Saints who were being squeezed by salary cap restrictions. Now Dawson and injury prone ex-Collingwood forward Brad Dick have joined in pre-season training with Fremantle. Dawson played 63 games, including the 2009 Grand Final, in three seasons for the Saints after being delisted by Hawthorn at the end of the 2008 season. Dick managed only 27 games over five seasons at Collingwood after being picked at 44 in the 2006 National draft. IN these days of multi-million dollar turnovers it is nothing extra ordinary but for the Western Bulldogs any year that they can return a profit is a good year. And for the fifth consecutive year they have done just that in announcing an operating profit of $121,762 for the year ending October 31, 2011. THE Sydney influence is set to continue with two Sydney Swans and a former Sydney Swan are among the six retiring players nominated for this year’s AFL Players Association Madden Medal award. Sydney players have already won two of the four Madden Medals that have been presented. First awarded in 2007 the Madden Medal is named after former greats Simon and Justin Madden and is presented to a retiring AFL player who throughout his career has demonstrated not just on-field brilliance, but off-field achievements along with personal growth and community spirit. Geelong captain Cameron Ling is today expected to announce is retirement from AFL football. They say the best way to go out is on top, and the Geelong superstar has done exactly that. The decision comes just three days after he led his team to their third AFL grand final win in five years, a win that he played a pivotal role in. In the final game of his career he was tasked with tagging Brownlow medalist Dane Swan and he did an outstanding job holding the Collingwood star to 20 disposals. To cap off his career and grand final experience, Ling also managed to kick the final goal of the 38 point win for the Cats on Saturday. Geelong have taken their third AFL flag in five years with a comprehensive 38-point win over arch-rival Collingwood in the 2011 Grand Final. The match was played in cold and greasy conditions, courtesy of some unpredictable Melbourne spring weather. After enjoying much of the momentum, Collingwood 9.3 (57) led Geelong 8.6 (54) at halftime in a match that was played at a fierce tempo and shaping as classic contest, clearly showcasing how these teams finished 1-2 in the competition proper. The Cats had rallied to register three of the last four goals of the quarter to trail by just three points - after leading by one at quarter-time. Immediately prior to the long break Geelong forward James Podsiadly was stretchered off with a dislocated shoulder. Podsiadly was replaced by Mitch Duncan and subbed out of the game.
